HIV/AIDS: Grassroots List December 2024

By Carolyn Gevinski and Claudia Gohn

Over the past few months, we have highlighted activism organizations that support queer and unhoused communities, survivors of domestic violence, and the working class. This December, in honor of it being HIV/AIDS awareness month, our list includes grassroots organizations that support, spread awareness, and provide resources for those whose loved ones or themselves live with HIV.

If you’re looking to support groups that focus on HIV/AIDS, please consider donating to the following organizations:

  1. Act Up is a group that values diversity and is committed to ending the AIDS crisis. They work with government officials, communicate medical developments, and organize demonstrations.

  2. HousingWorks Community Healthcare works to decrease the number of new HIV infections and improve outcomes for those living with HIV and AIDS. They also aim to end racial health disparities. HousingWorks offers testing and treatment.

  3. The Alliance for Positive Change offers HIV and hepatitis C testing, access to healthcare, and education. They also have substance abuse, housing, and return to work programs.

  4. The LGBTQ+ Center in New York provides free HIV testing and organizes an annual northeast AIDS bike ride from Boston to New York City. They also offer counseling, community support, and case management.

  5. Harlem United provides healthcare, housing, and harm reduction to those with complex needs intensified by discrimination.

  6. AIDS Center of Queens County is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS services in Queens. They offer comprehensive medical care, case management, education, legal, and housing services, and have a youth drop in center.

  7. AIDS Walk New York is the world’s largest HIV/AIDS fundraising event. The walk will happen this year on May 18, 2025. The walk benefits GMHC, the world’s first HIV organization, which has programs serving New Yorkers.

  8. Callen-Lorde provides HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention services, and care including rapid testing, primary medical care, medication adherence counseling, and mental healthcare.
