Pride Isn’t Over: Grassroots List July 2024

By Carolyn Gevinski

Pride Month is over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t support the NYC queer community year-round! Here’s Grassroots Magazine’s monthly list of local organizations you can donate to if you’re looking to provide LGBTQ+ grassroots support:

  1. The Ali Forney Center provides an Emergency Housing Program for homeless LGBTQ+ youths. The center also partners with the Unity Works program for job readiness education and provides health services, as well as trans-specific programs.

  2. New Alternatives works to reduce homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in New York City. New clients are accepted on a walk-in basis every weekday and Sunday. New Alternatives also offers Sunday community dinners, a book club, and HIV peer support.

  3. Callen-Lorde Community Health Center offers transgender-affirming healthcare, non-judgemental women’s healthcare, health outreach to teens, and a variety of other unique services.

  4. The Brooklyn Community Pride Center is Brooklyn’s hub for programs and resources that serve the LGBTQ+ community. They host an adult trans & gender nonconforming support group and SMART addiction recovery series as well as other fun community events!

  5. GMHC is an organization fighting to end the AIDS epidemic. Their 39th annual AIDS Walk (which has been going on since 1986!) in May brought together over 9,000 people.

  6. The Audre Lorde Project is a center for community organizing in New York City. The project includes SOS, an anti-violence program, TransJustice, a political group, and 3rd Space, a support program for queer people who struggle with employment, education, healthcare, and immigration status.

  7. G.L.I.T.S. is a Black trans-led advocacy and services organization that helps provide crisis support, stable housing, and healthcare for transgender sex workers, asylum seekers, and other marginalized people

  8. BTFA, or Black Trans Femmes in the Arts, works to produce and preserve Black trans art. BTFA offers in-house programming, including artist meet-ups, ballroom labs, and art visits.

  9. Lesbian Herstory Archives works to preserve lesbian history. The archives were founded in the 1970s when a group of women involved in the Gay Academic Union realized that Lesbian history was disappearing.

  10. Rainbow Heights Club is a drop-in mental-health space for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers. They offer a safe space for socialization, support, and recovery.

If you think your organization is right for one of our lists, send us a tip on our contact page and we’ll see if you’re a fit!
