Keeping up with Mental Health: Grassroots List August 2024

By Carolyn Gevinski

August is National Wellness Month, which means it’s time to take care of ourselves and be compassionate and mindful of our neighbors. Here’s Grassroots Magazine’s monthly list of local organizations you can donate to if you’re looking to support mental health grassroots movements:

  1. The Harlem Wellness Center is a community working to close the racial health gap. The Center provides access to holistic wellness programs that empower individuals and strengthen communities.

  2. The Family Center is an organization based in Brooklyn that provides support to those afflicted by life-altering events. They have programs for family support, legal wellness, health education, and mental health

  3. Inclusive Community Wellness Inc. aims to empower individuals from under-served New York City communities. They host wellness programs that incorporate exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, and aquatics among other practices.

  4. Academy of Medical & Public Health Services (AMPHS), which does business under the name RaisingHealth, works specifically with immigrant communities, providing health and social services, education, and community building programs.

  5. The Child Center of NY provides support to children and families through programs in early childhood education, behavioral health, health homes and integrated care, prevention and family support, residential services, and youth development.

  6. Project Hospitality, Inc., located in Staten Island, extends a helping hand to community members who are hungry, homeless, or otherwise in need. While their work prioritizes food, clothing, and shelter, Project Hospitality also provides wellness treatment in the form of recovery and substance abuse programs and a wellness center.

  7. Voces Latinas, located in Jackson Heights, Queens, helps undocumented Latin American immigrants through culturally sensitive services including a mental health program and sexual health & wellness services.

  8. Urban Upbound operates primarily to help low-income New Yorkers achieve stability. They offer limited free one-on-one counseling with mental health professionals.
