Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Grassroots List October 2024

By Carolyn Gevinski

October is Breast Cancer AND Domestic Violence Awareness Month—remember to wear pink on October 18th and purple on October 19 for #PurpleThursday, to support women and minority groups primarily affected! Here’s Grassroots Magazine’s monthly list of organizations you can seek help from or contribute to:

  1. We All Really Matter (WARM) supports victims, survivors, and families of victims of domestic violence through prevention, intervention, and support. They offer rapid response emergency services and intervention assistance.

  2. New Destiny Housing provides housing and services to survivors of domestic violence and their children across New York City. They are especially committed to finding permanent, affordable housing options.

  3. Sanctuary for Families offers counseling and crisis support, legal services, access to shelter, economic empowerment resources, resources specific to families and children, anti-trafficking support, and trainings.

  4. CONNECTworks to create safe families and peaceful communities by transforming the beliefs, behaviors, and institutions that perpetuate violence. They are one of the only domestic violence organizations that aims to achieve gender justice, in part through educating young men not to harm.

  1. New York Cancer Foundation offers financial assistance grants for non-medical expenses and transportation grants to patients in New York state. The Foundation aims to relieve some of the financial burden patients face.

  2. Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program provides a hotline with comprehensive breast cancer services, support, referrals, and information. They also run support groups for both men and women.

  3. Breast Cancer Help, Inc. is a grassroots organization fighting breast cancer on Long Island. They work to increase awareness and improve the quality of healthcare in the area through support from local elected officials, breast cancer mapping projects, cancer education in schools, and environmental legislation.

  4. SHAREing & CAREing was created to aid cancer patients and their families in Queens County and New York City. They work with all members of the community regardless of insurance status, providing prevention education, resources, and counseling. Their services are free of charge.
